Our history

The company, founded in 1920 by a group of local business people and representatives of the Municipality of Chiasso, obtained its status as a public utility and general interest service from the Government of Canton Ticino, and the concession to operate a bonded warehouse with an in-house customs office was granted by Federal Government.

Having acquired 35,000m2 of land, the company built a railway siding which was connected to the international cargo station in Chiasso. Engineer Robert Maillart was entrusted with the charge of building the warehouse, which is nowadays still considered a masterpiece of industrial architecture and is regularly visited by professionals and students from all over the world.

The main users of the new structure were the many  cigar manufacturers (at that time around 20 in the Canton), wine and cereal traders as well as forwarders.  In 1943 the grain silo was inaugurated.  With the establishment of the European Common Market international trade saw an unprecedented upturn and in 1961 the Stabio site, which today occupies about 82,000m2, was created.

Both Chiasso and Stabio have seen rapid developments since the seventies.  To adapt to changes in the economic environment and in European and Global trade agreements, the company has undergone and is still undergoing an intense program of construction and modernization to standards of infrastructure and technical installations to best satisfy client needs.
